Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
