“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
